Jacinda Mawson Nicklas, MD, MPH, MA, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, as well as a faculty member of CPC Clinical Research, an Academic Research Organization affiliated with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Nicklas completed her undergraduate degree in Human Biology and Masters degree in Anthropology at Stanford University. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Primary Care at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She received her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health and completed her clinical research fellowship in Integrative Medicine and General Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
After completion of her training, Dr. Nicklas joined the faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Her clinical and research expertise lies in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on clinical trials. She is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, and she provides patient care in both primary care and specialized obesity clinics, and founded a postpartum transition clinic to support women after high-risk pregnancies in reducing long-term cardiometabolic risk. Dr. Nicklas completed the NIH-funded Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K12 scholarship and an NIH K23 career development award.
Dr. Nicklas has served in numerous leadership roles on federally and philanthropically funded clinical trials. She was the principal investigator of the Fit After Baby study, a mobile health intervention designed to support postpartum weight loss, and co-principal investigator of the Balance After Baby trial, which evaluated a web-based program to reduce postpartum weight retention in women with recent gestational diabetes. She works on several multi-site trials, including the Enhanced Lifestyles for Metabolic Syndrome study and the TRANSFORM study, which compares imaging-based and risk factor-based strategies for cardiovascular prevention. She also served as site principal investigator for the COVID-OUT trial, a randomized study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Her research portfolio includes work on GLP-1 combination medications for weight loss, the impact of diet composition on inflammation, and behavioral strategies for successful weight loss in the general population.
